Above all, in our classroom, we focus on the process of growth.  In order to grow and learn, we need to have a mindset that failure is awesome!  We need to fail in order to learn.  You will often hear me refer to having a "growth mindset".  I approach my teaching with this in mind and I do my best to help kids approach learning the same way.

We are A BYOD Classroom

Bring your own device, or BYOD, allows students to bring their own tech devices to school.  I encourage every child to bring a device as their parents see fit for use in our classroom. CCS has created a clear policy on the expectations of use of personal devices in the classroom.  You can read that at the link below.

Ways we use our devices in the classroom:

-Reach reading textbook

-Social Studies/TCI interactive lessons, text

-Everyday math website

-Kahoot assessments

-Creating Google docs/slideshows/pages

-Research

-Practicing math facts

-Creating videos for presentations

-Completing Google classroom assignments

-And many more...

Our Specials Schedule

Second nine weeks (updated for 2016-2017 school year)

Monday--Media

Tuesday--Computer

Wednesday--PE

Thursday--Music

Friday--Art

Specials schedules change each 9 weeks in order to ensure all students attend all specials classes an "equal" number of times.

For instance, if you have PE on Monday you will miss PE every time school is out on a Monday (which seems to be often).  This rotation helps us balance this concern.

This schedule will be updated each 9 weeks, however, we will rotate one day FORWARD next nine weeks.

How We "Manage" to Get Along on TEAM Luna

I believe strongly in creating a loving, caring, nurturing, respectful community environment in our classroom.  I believe that if students are treated with respect that they will in turn treat their teachers and peers with respect.  In our classroom students feel safe to make mistakes, to ask questions, to offer suggestions and advice, and to be unique.

In order to encourage positive choices in our classroom we use strategies from the book "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids" by Sean Covey.  We work together to continually improve and learn by making these habits true, daily "habits". Hopefully you will hear some of this language from time to time and encourage your child to use the habits at home.

Fourth and fifth Grade students in Carmel Clay Schools receive report cards with letter grades. Report cards are issued electronically each nine weeks.  Grades can be found anytime, online through your MyCCS portal.  I encourage parents to check these grades often.  I also send home graded work on a weekly basis.

It is important to understand that I use two systems of evaluating students' work--formative and summative assessments.  The summative assessment items will be marked with letter grades as these are the "final" assessments at the end of each unit of study.  The formative assessments will be marked with a check plus (secure skill), a check (developing skill) OR a check minus (beginning skill).  If you see a check or a check minus, you can expect that I have retaught that skill to your child.  The checked papers are not recorded in the gradebook, but rather are a useful tool to help both the students and myself monitor progress as we move through each unit of study.
